Rebuilding 1966 CL77 carbs

Post by CYCLEGUY1800 » Thu Jan 14, 2016 11:41 am

Just working on the old carbs on a 66' CL77 Scrambler , I used Honda parts were I can and tried different rebuild kits that are out there. The Honda needle jets and needles work the best if they are in the carbs but on this set there was a Honda CB77 jet needle on one side and no markings on the other needle . So I got a couple of Keyster kits and a Sudco kit as the Sudco kit offered a needle jet ( my needle jet was deformed on one side ) the Keyster kits were KH-0016 and KH-0017 so I could just to try out the different needles offered . The D9 needles seem to work the best which are for the CB77 superhawk , the D13 needles for the CL77 scrambler not so much, poor drive-ability , what ever you do don't use the needles out of the Sudco kit , this kit says it will work on both CL72 and CL77 , no way , the needles are way too long and the main jets and carb top gaskets are only for the CL72 engines , too small in size in both parts. Still tuning with a #40 or #42 idle jet here @ 3400 ft to see which one works best . Plug color is a nice tan color right now and drive-ability is great even with the "snuffer" exhaust pipe valves installed. You should use Load Mouses float level method if you don't have a gauge , when I check his method against the gauge his method is pretty right on . I am looking at different electronic ignitions out there for more even firing as this engine has sloppy advance unit , there is one that is a crank fired system out there which I think would fix the timing issues.
