Carb Float Adjustment Clarification

Post by JC » Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:52 pm

I've read all of the posts regarding carb adjustments and especially float adjustments. I have two questions to ask just to clarify:

1. The float setting of 26.5 mm is measured from the surface that the bowl gasket seals against or, is it measured from from the top of the "lip" that surrounds the gasket?

2. Is the measurement made with the float valve spring fully depressed? (carb inverted)

I had my '67 CL77 running but it was popping through the left pipe and fouling the plug. I read where this indicates a incorrect float setting (too rich) and I've been trying to correct it but now I can't even get it started. I've gotten real good at taking my carbs on and off!

I need some advice before I bring out my shotgun! It's not even 2 O'clock and I'm getting deep into that six pack!!!

Thanks in advance for any help,
Jim Cain

Jim, Are you sure the carb(s) are the problem? Check your points and timing adjustments too. Mabey you'll find it there and wont need the second 6 pack. Good Luck, Kustommusic

Hi Jim

I'd check your figures, pretty sure 26.5mm is for the CB72 carbs.

I have a simple way to set the floats on the CB/CL77 carbs. With the bowls removed and also the main jet I look across the bottoms of the floats and set the float tang to just touch the needle valve at the same time I just see the brass main jet holder. ...................lm

Carb Float Adjustment Clarification

Post by JC » Fri Jun 27, 2008 10:29 am

Kustommusic, I used Ed Moore's tune up guide, but I'll double check. Thanks

Phil, My Clymer's manual says 26.5mm for the CL77 and most of the posts here use that measurement. I'll double check that too. Thanks

Loudmouse, That sounds to easy to be true but, it's tricks like these that comes from years of experience that usually trumps the manuals! I'll get it done this evening. Thank you

Ed, does the above hold true for the CA77 carb as well?

If not, do you have a similar technique for the Dream carb? Please elaborate if so.

Thanks.
