Petcock Rollercoaster

Post by slopokecr » Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:04 am

Long time. Respect to all the Givers of Knowledge and Wisdom.

anyhow, 1967 CA77. Petcock rebuild. I notice that the top of the petcock rim (where it meets the bottom of the tank) has a couple of dips between the 3 screws. Feeling the bottom of the tank with my fingers reveals that there are indeed some waves (in the tank bottom) where the bottom of the tank meets the petcock with an oring. (Seemingly mating) Seen it? Solutions? (New O-ring--Leaking)

Mine is on the kitchen table for rebuild as we speak.
Was getting ready to reply that it was completely straight, until I went and looked.
It does appear there are a couple of very slight dips on the backside (opposite the lever) between the screws.
Haven't scrutinized the mating surface on the tank yet, but will go look now.
I had no leakage issues between the tank and petcock, just a torn interior gasket, see here:

I checked the mating surface on a spare tank and it appears to be reasonably flat....maybe a slight bulging near the welded seam, but couldn't get a straight edge on it to see for sure.

It's hard for me to believe these were designed as curved surfaces, since it is so close to a welded seam.

The o-ring protrudes considerably above the petcock, so it should be able to conform to some irregularity in the surfaces.

Thanks Brewsky. I read your other petcock thread as well, and found some helpful hints. I look forward to giving it another shot.

Aloha, Slo
