How do I remove carburator top from body?

Post by jmoody01 » Sun Jun 06, 2010 3:11 pm

I am trying to remove my CA77 carburator for a rebuild. I removed the air filter hose and unbolted the carb from the body and have slid off of the studs and dropped down the carb. Next, I unscrewed the top of the carb where the trottle cable enters. I though this would just pull right out, but it feels like is hitting some type of flange(?) or something is stopping the top from pulling out. Any ideas what I am doing wrong here or how the top should be removed?

Should just pull right out the top with the slide and spring. It may have a ridge built up in the slide area stopping it?

OK, Thanks Dave, I will try a little more pressure, I didn't want to pull to hard once I got resistance until confirming that it should pull out....will update in a few.... Thanks, Jim

I recently started rebuilding my carburetor and ran into the same problem. After a quick dip in boiling water the slide dropped right out.

OK, Still no luck in getting this disassembled after 3/4 can of carb cleaner and 1/4 can of WD-40. Basically, I can freely slide the venturi up and down in the top cylinder. As I slide it upwards it stops right as the top of the venturi gets to the top of the cylinder. I can look through both ends of the carb and just see the needle sticking down, the bottom of the venturi is just barely visible. I have tried using plyers to grab the trottle cable and pull to no avail. I am at wits end here other then to keep spraying and spraying, but I don't see any forward progress here. I'm about at the point of cutting the throttle cable so I can get the whole carb assembly out of the bike and grab the severed cable with vise grips to pull. It should not be this hard.... and I really don't want to cut the cable.... any more ideas on what to try here?

before someone asks.... it is the throttle valve that I can slide up and down (not the venturi) until it hits the sticking point...

Try sanding the top of the slide chamber with some 600 grit or finer paper, followed by 0000 steel wool.
