oil dipstickGentlemen, what is the proper way to check engine oil, threading the dipstick in till it seats against the engine case or just inserting it till it makes contact with the top of the oil fill hole?

I have heard from two different people that 15-40 synthetic (diesel oil), works well in these old engines, ( 1967 CL77 305) but I was wondering what others were using.
