Not dissing your abilities or experience... just unwilling to trust that I understand these things fully. In fact, your greater experience makes your method risky for me precisely because I have to understand exactly what "too much" force is (for instance). Easier when you have a trained feel for it...

I did. PB, then acetone/ATF. I didn't bother to mention it, because it seemed obvious considering the other threads I've participated in where we discussed using the AA combo on the pistons. I still haven't gotten them loose.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, the stock knob has a serrated design (like internal gear teeth) that engages against a lock to prevent it from moving on its own. I'll probably buy a replacement. Or ask the fellow with the grinder if he can get it out... I might even be able to remove the existin...

Gah. The stud broke in half. I don't plan to repair the knob. It's the hole in the steering stem I'm wanting to fix. As I mentioned, I have someone who can remove the broken part of the stud from the steering stem with a die grinder (and evidently, very steady hands) but he wants to know what tap to...

Dream, '66. The steering damper knob broke off right at the hole; the knob has about two turns of the thread left on it.
